Internet wagering in Portugal expanded by 24.8 percent in the initial three months of 2023.
Based on data from the Portuguese Gaming Regulation and Inspection Service (SRIJ), overall gross gaming revenue (GGR) from online gambling and gaming in Portugal reached €196.4 million (£169.4 million/$209.7 million) in the first three months of 2023.
This signifies a 24.8% increase in comparison to the same period in 2022 and a minor increase in comparison to the €195.3 million generated by Portuguese operators in the final quarter of 2022.
Online sports betting GGR accounted for €85.7 million of the total revenue, while other online activities generated €110.7 million.
Total wagers placed on sports betting in the quarter reached €441.4 million, down 3.8% from the final quarter of 2022 but up 19.5% year-over-year. For other online gambling, the quarter witnessed €29.7 billion in wagers placed.
In terms of which sports were most popular for betting, soccer topped the list, accounting for 70.6% of all sports bets. Basketball and tennis combined accounted for 25% of wagers placed.
The SRIJ also noted that as of March 31, 2023, there were 166,300 players registered on Portugal’s self-exclusion list.
Brick-and-mortar GGR – generated by casinos and gaming arcades – totaled €65.9 million in the quarter, down 1.7% from the final quarter of 2022. However, this represented a 22.2% increase in comparison to the same period last year.
Non-banked gaming – including poker tournaments and bingo – generated €998,490 in GGR in the quarter, up 50.3% year-over-year.

Gaming machines produced a total of nine million euros in revenue, representing a 15.9% rise. The remaining fourteen million euros came from traditional gambling venues, excluding poker and bingo.
