Sixty-six global lottery entities have joined forces for a U.S.-based holiday initiative. Their objective is to increase public understanding of the concealed risks associated with giving lottery scratch-offs to underage individuals. Studies indicate a significant correlation between early gambling exposure and an elevated likelihood of developing gambling-related issues in adulthood.

This year represents the 6th anniversary of the “Give Thoughtfully” campaign. This collaborative project involves these lottery corporations and 84 civic groups. They aim to disseminate the message that lottery tickets are inappropriate presents for young people. Leading the charge are the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) and McGill University’s International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors.

These organizations are employing various tactics to convey their message. Be on the lookout for public service broadcasts, digital media initiatives, web-based advertisements, and in-store displays. Additionally, they are directly engaging with retailers to educate them about the potential hazards.

Jeffrey Derevensky, director of the International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviors, emphasizes the campaign’s significance. He highlights the increasing prevalence and accessibility of gambling worldwide, making the protection of youth even more critical. The “Give Thoughtfully” campaign serves as a well-timed message that lottery tickets should never be deemed suitable presents for children or adolescents.

This endeavor is supported by numerous esteemed lottery entities from the United States and Canada, in conjunction with prominent global participants, encompassing both lottery and non-lottery sectors. Keith Whyte, the executive director at NCPG, conveyed his appreciation for the substantial backing from these organizations. He highlighted how this joint effort will facilitate raising awareness regarding the hazards linked to adolescent wagering.

It’s noteworthy that this project carries significant influence, boasting endorsements from both the North American lottery associations and their equivalents within the World Lottery Association and European Lotteries. This campaign comes on the heels of NCPG’s latest unveiling of their Autumn 2023 funding, amounting to a considerable $176,000, intended to address problematic gambling throughout the US.
